Grillska Highschool — Space to think
When Grillska Gymnasiet took over a school building in Marievik, Stockholm, Codesign was commissioned to rebrand the space. With a limited budget to cover over 8000 square meters of space, it was a challenging brief. Architect Staffan Virke explained the concept to nestle study zones within spaces with unique graphic identity. They hoped these attractive spaces would encourage students to stay on at school and have a positive effect on learning. With its functional sound absorbing tiles and a wide palette of shapes and colors to choose between, BAUX sound absorbing tiles was the perfect material for the project.
As the school was divided into several floors, Codesign created a palate of colors and shapes that gave each floor a unique identity. This helped students and staff orientate themselves within the building. The study zones, complete with BAUX designs, contrasted the ambience of the busy main spaces. The wood wool tiles helped to lower sound reflections, creating quiet zones for study and reflection. Reactions from students and staff have been really positive – the study zones are popular and the students appreciate the thought that has been put into designing their workspace.

Good sound in bustling environments
Sound pollution and bad acoustics affects our cognitive ability and reduces the students ability to learn and leads to less productivity. With BAUX learning environments sound pollution decreases and makes for a happier, more inspired and focused student.
BAUX was the perfect material for the project. It’s great for large spaces. It’s functional in terms of sound absorption, graphic and visually attractive and cost effective. The variations in color and shape helped us to realize our vision of unique zones within a bigger space.
